1. Policy Statement
As a freelance music workshop provider working with primary school-aged children, I am committed to creating a safe, positive, and respectful environment for all participants. I recognize the rights of every child to be protected from harm, abuse, and exploitation and will take all reasonable steps to ensure their safety and wellbeing during my workshops.
This policy outlines my approach to child protection and safeguarding, in accordance with Scottish legislation, including the Children and Young People (Scotland) Act 2014, the National Guidance for Child Protection in Scotland (2021), and other relevant statutory and regulatory frameworks.
2. Scope
This policy applies to all work undertaken by me, Roberto Cassani, when delivering music workshops in Scottish primary schools under the project title “Joyful Urkestra”. It covers all interactions with children and young people under the age of 18.
3. Principles
- The welfare of the child is paramount.
- All children, regardless of age, disability, gender, racial or ethnic origin, religion or belief, sexual orientation, or identity, have the right to equal protection from harm.
- I will work in partnership with schools and relevant agencies to promote child wellbeing and protection.
4. Responsibilities
As a freelancer:
- I will ensure I am familiar with and follow the child protection policies of each school I work with.
- I will maintain an up-to-date PVG (Protecting Vulnerable Groups) Scheme membership through Disclosure Scotland.
- I will report any concerns about a child’s welfare or safety to the school’s designated Child Protection Officer (CPO) or Head Teacher, following their reporting procedures.
- I will not engage in any behaviour that could be construed as abusive, exploitative, or inappropriate.
5. Code of Conduct
I will:
- Treat all children with respect and dignity.
- Avoid any unnecessary physical contact and never use physical punishment.
- Use appropriate language and tone when communicating with children.
- Ensure that activities are age-appropriate and inclusive.
- Avoid being alone with a child where possible; where unavoidable, ensure that another adult is informed.
- Never give personal contact information to children or communicate with them outside of school-related activities.
6. Recognising and Responding to Concerns
I will be alert to signs of abuse, neglect, or distress in children. If I have any concerns, I will:
- Record the concern factually and accurately.
- Report it immediately to the school’s designated Child Protection Officer or senior staff.
- Not investigate or question the child further.
- Maintain confidentiality, only sharing information with those who need to know.
7. Training and Review
- I will undertake child protection training appropriate to my role and keep my knowledge current.
- This policy will be reviewed annually or earlier if there are changes in legislation or guidance.
